Open call for the restoration of lighting on Avenida de Reina Maria Cristina in Barcelona

English (Czech below, originally written 14.3.2017):

People who love the city of Barcelona, who are not indifferent to the cultural-historical-political legacy
for future generations, people from all over the world, to whom this beautiful city has become home,
citizens of Barcelona, Barcelona!
I hereby ask the help of every competent person and I appeal with this open letter for the creation
of a petition and subsequently a project to restore a world-unique and its meaning and style iconic
cultural monument on the promenade of Queen Maria Christina leading to the magical fountain and
the National Palace of King Alfonso XIII.

It is a forgotten unique column lighting destroyed during the unfortunate times of dictator Franco.
This magnificently designed lighting resonated perfectly with its art deco style with the overall
futuristic scenery of this part of the city created on the occasion of the famous EXPO in 1929.
I believe that the voice of the people and cultural capacities of the whole of Spain, if not the whole
world, can reverse the current situation and restore Queen Mary's promenade to its original splendor,
if we know that something similar has already happened in the immediate vicinity of the magic
fountain. At the end of the Expo in 1930, the German pavilion of the famous architect Ludwig Mies
van der Rohe was dismantled. But due to the great interest of the created work and its subsequent
recognition, it was considered a necessity of reconstruction and in 1986 a copy of the pavilion was
opened in its original place.

Contemporary pseudo historical lamps are pitiful nonsense, which not only does not correspond
to the original idea and style of the architects, but also completely kills the opportunity to highlight
the beauty, monumentality and truly unique atmosphere of this place.

To literally shed light on the importance of restoring this Art Deco lighting,
here is a little about this place and the history of this alley:
Avenida de la Reina Maria Cristina (in Catalan that Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina)
is located in the Sants-Montjuic district of Barcelona (Spain).

Avenida was created together with pavilions and a magical fountain for the purpose of EXPO
- the world fair. The exhibition was opened by King Alfonso XIII himself on May 19, 1929.

- The exhibition was visited by over 200,000 people and countless important political,
economic and cultural figures from Catalonia, throughout Spain, Europe and America.
King Alfonso XIII was a visionary, a great supporter of tourism and a lover of architecture.

The light of the city was one of the main ideological symbols of the exhibition.
This aspect was made up of three elements:

1.Rays of light from the National Palace. (still exists)

2. Magic fountain.(still exists)

3. Light columns alongside Avenida de la Reina Maria Cristina (does not  exist)

One of the most impressive facilities that caused a great stir during the city's electrification
was the two rows of subtle Art-deco Vitrolux light columns winding from the Venetian towers
of Plaza España and illuminating the entrance to the monumental pavilion scenery,
the magical fountain and the National Palace crowned by rays of light.

The octagonal, eight-meter-high color-changing luminaires were designed by Catalan engineer
Mariano Rubio Bellver and architect Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier. In the way of the philosophy
with which the exhibition was conceived, they created a bombastic theatrical spectacle together.
The inhabitants of the city immediately fell in love with the lights and christened them asparagus
in the name of "espárragos", which became popular for years to come.

Originally the promenade supposed to be called  Avenida Americana. However  6.2. In 1929,
the mother and regent of Alfonso XIII, Queen Mary Christina of Habsburg-Lorraine
(born on July 21, 1858, Židlochovice Chateau / BRNO - Moravia), died.
She was loved and respected by the people, considered an agile woman at the time.
For example, she flew in a balloon to a height of 350 m. And therefore, in the end,
the promenade with an alley of lights, above which Zeppelin later appeared,
was named Avenida de la Reina Maria Cristina in her honor.

On both sides of the alley were the main buildings of the exhibition:
the Palace of Costumes; Palace of Communications and Transport; and the Palace
of Metallurgy, Electricity and Locomotive. Today, these buildings are used as an exhibition
space during the Barcelona Fair.

Almost all the popular "asparagus" lights disappeared after the war, when under the pretext
of reconstruction, had dictator Franco removed them.

In the 1980s, new fountains were created on the promenade, that were supposed to spray
up to a height of eight meters ( the original height of the light columns).

In a completely different place on the MontJuic hill, in the Vila Olímpica complex were build
up  a series of cylindrical light columns in front of the Palau sant Jordi stadium, which are
supposed to commemorate the past glory of this original lighting world sensation.

Avenida de la Reina Maria Cristina is not only one of the biggest tourist attractions, where
the city of Barcelona with its citizens celebrates the biggest events throughout the year,
such as football victories, New Year's Eve, ceremonial procession of the three kings,
marathons, LGTBQ Pride etc. But above all it is a place where Barcelona presents itself
internationally with its fairs, symposiums, festivals, exhibitions, concerts, a place where
literally the whole world meets.
I therefore repeat and appeal with this letter for the creation of a petition and subsequently
a project (at least an exhibition) for the restoration of a world-unique and with its meaning
and style iconic cultural monument, lighting columns "Espárragos" lamps on the promenade
of Queen Mary Christina.

Last but not least, the wonderful interplay of coincidences is certainly worth mentioning.
I, Martin Kámen, who am writing this letter, am a Czech artist who moved to Barcelona
in 2015. And coincidentally, Queen Mary Christina (already mentioned in the text) is originally
from Moravia, at that time part of the Habsburg Empire, later Czechoslovakia, today's
Czech Republic.
We have nine years to return the original vision on such a historically important place,
this unique jewel, which would shine brightly into the future of Barcelona again after exactly
hundred years.

Barcelono!
monumentálnost a opravdu unikátní atmosféru tohoto místa.

Abychom doslova osvětlili důležitost obnovy Art decového osvětlení, zde je něco málo o tomto
místu a historii vzniku této aleje.
Avenida vznikla spolu s pavilony a magickou fontánou za účelem EXPA - světového veletrhu.
Výstavu zahájil samotný král Alfonso XIII 19. května roku 1929. Výstavu navštívilo přes 200000
lidí a bezpočet významných politických, ekonomických a kulturních osobností z Katalánska, celého
Španělska, Evropy a Ameriky. Král Alfonso XIII byl vizionář, velký podporovatel turistického ruchu a
milovník architektury.
Světlo města bylo jedním z hlavních ideologických symbolů výstavy.
Tento aspekt byl tvořen ze tří prvků:
1. Paprsky světla od Národního paláce.
2. Kouzelná fontána.
scenérie pavilonů, magické fontány a národního paláce korunovaného paprsky světla.
Osmiboká, osm metrů vysoká světelná tělesa měnící barvy  navrhl katalánský inženýr
Mariano Rubio Bellver spolu s architektem Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier.
Na obou stranách aleje byly hlavní budovy expozice: Palác kostýmů;
Palác komunikací a dopravy; a palác metalurgie, elektřiny a Lokomotiv.
